PLAYER DIARY > Friday 28th April 2006 > Jean-Michel Saive
The main thoughts on my mind when I woke up today was yesterday, with the team winning we still had a chance of doing well in the tournament.
Everybody wanted me to play; if France could beat Japan then we’d be through, so they wanted me to play against Croatia this morning. I knew that would be a really tough match.
My mind wasn’t focused on the World Championships, I had written it off, I didn’t think the team would achieve a top three finish in the group so my attention was in next week’s Champions League match.
Philippe has played so well, I can’t believe how well he’s played. I wanted to play this morning; you practise and train to play in the big events like the World Championships. However, I wasn’t sure if I was fit enough after the leg injury I sustained playing against Damien Eloi earlier in the week.
Anyway, I slept well; I was walking fine but I wasn’t sure how much pressure I could put on my left leg. I asked the coach what Plan `B’ was if I couldn’t play. There wasn’t a Plan `B’!
We arrived at the hall at about 8.30am, I had a massage on my leg for about ten to fifteen minutes and I felt reasonably happy; I practised with Yannick Vostes for about twenty-five minutes but I didn’t feel good. I’d no feeling for the ball, it wasn’t a good situation at all.
When I play it’s often spin to spin and I wasn’t sure if I was fit enough to do that. Anyway, our new coach Tian Zichao handed the team names in, I had no choice! He was nervous, first World Championships for Belgium, he wanted to do well.
So, I telephoned my doctor in Belgium, he thought it would be no problem if I played, so I did! We started at 10.00am and surprisingly, I played well. I beat Roko Tosic who I lost to at the Brazil Open and in the Champions League and we won the match. I tried not to play spin to spin but play short points; I didn’t want a long match. I was worried about my legs.
Anyway, everything went well. After that I went to eat, then rested and came back in the evening for the match against France in the first round. Today, there’s really no time do anything else but play and rest. It’s the only day so far we’ve had two matches.
I keep thinking about my girlfriend and Philippe’s wife, they are together on holiday in Egypt and that’s where the bomb went off earlier in the week. We’ve spoken to them and they are fine, no problem.
Tonight we lost to France, I lost to Patrick Chila. It’s hard to finish this way but my leg is relatively fine, not perfect but acceptable.
Now it’s time to eat and then rest. I may check the tennis results but now it’s time to rest and focus on the Champions League next week.
